Dr Ramanujam Parthasarathy,
Founder Director of the Loyola ELT Centre
Dr Ramanujam Parthasarathy, the founding Director of the Loyola ELT Centre, was a Reader in the Department of English at Andhra Loyola College (ALC). In a career spanning three decades of teaching and faculty training, he taught English as a second language and English literature at ALC and ELT at the University of Madras, besides serving English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, as an external faculty member. As a faculty trainer, he has conducted over 95 workshops on various aspects of ELT, continuing professional development, exploratory practice and action research, and given plenary talks at national and international ELT conferences.
His research work covers a diverse range of interests within ELT: materials evaluation (for a PhD degree); a 2-year ZEE-Education-funded materials-production project about which papers have been published in reputable ELT journals, national and international; two action research projects; and a UGC-funded research project. Besides being a research supervisor and examiner, he has guest edited research journals; served as a member of the editorial board of two international journals; published 23 books, 16 research papers, and over 500 feature articles as a columnist and a freelance writer; and edited Loyola Today, the campus newspaper of Andhra Loyola College for 26 years.
He has received two national awards in recognition of his contribution to educational innovations: (a) TCS Award from Tata Consultancy Services; and (b) Father Mathias Award for Innovative College Teachers from the All-India Association for Christian Higher Education. In 1987, he visited the USA on a Rotary Foundation fellowship.
He holds degrees/diplomas in English Literature, Education, ELT and Creative Writing from five Indian universities: Madras, Sri Venkateswara, Annamalai, EFL and IGNOU.
As the Director of the Loyola ELT Centre, Dr Ramanujam:
From 2008 to 2013, when he was at the helm at the Centre, it was visited by a number of teachers of English from different schools, colleges and universities both for availing themselves of the ELT resources at the Centre and the expertise of its Director, and for advice on ELT research.
He retired both from the Centre and from ALC on 31 May 2013.

As the Director of the Loyola ELT Centre, Dr Ramanujam:
- organized a variety of professional development programmes which were attended by teachers of English from different universities, colleges and schools in India (details under 'National Seminars/Workshops' and 'State/Regional Workshops');
- rendered ELT consultancy services (details under 'Consultancy');
- conducted significant experiments;
- promoted the Reflective Approach (RA) as a sustainable model of continuing professional development (CPD) for teachers in general and teachers of English in particular (He conducted several significant workshops on CPD at which the RA model was vigorously promoted and teachers were encouraged to undertake RA as part of their CPD. Besides, he offered post-workshop mentoring services also to those teachers who had adopted one or more of the procedures suggested for their own CPD);
- published books under the auspices of the Centre (details under 'Publications'); and
- honoured renowned ELT experts like Professor M L Tickoo.
