Professor Makhan Lal Tickoo, eminent ELT scholar, was felicitated by the Centre on 12 August 2008. Fr A Theckemury, Director, Andhra Loyola College Alumni Association, was the chief guest at the ceremony and Professor V Robert Bellarmine, formerly English Studies Officer, British Council (South India), was the guest of honour. Those who felicitated Prof Tickoo included the Patrons of the Loyola ELT Centre, Fr Dr D Showraiah and Fr Dr S Emmanuel, and its Director, Dr P Ramanujam.
Dr Ramanujam drescribed Professor Tickoo as ‘a pragmatic ELT thinker who never allows excitement to get the better of practical sense and who can always be turned to for an Indian perspective on a new idea in ELT.’ Fr Theckemury congratulated Prof Tickoo on his outstanding contribution to ELT in India and abroad over half a century. Prof Robert Bellarmine emphasized Prof Tickoo’s courage of conviction which led him to ‘correct and guide the educational managers and policy makers of Indian education.’
In his acceptance speech, Prof Tickoo spoke with great modesty and described the honour bestowed on him by the ELT Centre as “largely undeserving appreciation” and the elevation he had in his career from the position of a middle-class teacher to several high-level positions as “chance happenings.” He urged teachers of English to keep alive their thirst for learning.
